The Department of Microbiology at Narayana Medical College, Nellore is committed to achieving highest possible standard in diagnostic microbiology, academics, and research.
The Department plays a pivotal role in the surveillance of Health-care Associated Infection Control Programs and in implementing Hospital infection control practices and Antibiotic Policy.
As part of the community service, the Department appraises the notifiable diseases to the district health authorities.
The Department pursues research with many publications on Infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance in various NMC approved journals (including SCOPUS and PUBMED indexed).

Mission

Dr P Vasundhara Devi, MD, ACME, Heads the Department of Microbiology, Narayana Medical College, Nellore. She is a dynamic and committed microbiologist with over 25 years of experience in undergraduate and Postgraduate Teaching, Research and Diagnostics. She has over 20 years of experience as an UG examiner and over 10 years as PG examiner and a registered PhD guide with the NTRUHS. In addition to undergoing the basic training in MET in NMC nodal centre, Madam has also completed the Advance Course in Medical Education from Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai, NMC Nodal Centre for Medical education technologies. Madam has over 20 publications in national and international journals to her credit and her chief area of interests include Infectious disease and Antimicrobial Resistance. She is committed in her endeavour to ensure quality teaching and diagnostics in the department of Microbiology.
The department caters to the educational needs of undergraduate, postgraduate medical students and paramedical students.
The teaching curriculum has been carefully planned to include adequate theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. We are constantly updating our teaching methodologies to keep abreast with the CBME module of student-centric learning.
The department actively participates in Interdisciplinary collaboration for integration and alignment of curriculum with other departments such as Pathology, Pharmacology and General Medicine.
The teaching faculty have been well trained in Medical Education Technologies (MET), including the Advanced Course in Medical Education at the NMC Nodal centres for MET.
The department aims to continuously strive for the highest possible standard in teaching and research activities.
Department of Microbiology is a multidisciplinary unit consisting of Molecular biology, Bacteriology, Immunology (mainly Serological test), Mycology and Mycobacteriology.
Department has a well-equipped and spacious practical laboratory of over 125 seating capacity for UG and PG teaching purposes.
The department has a dynamic group of Consultant Microbiologists who are committed in to work with all health care professionals to provide clinically relevant and timely and reports to aid in patient care.
SERVICE LAB: Diagnostic Facilities
Bacteriology – Microscopic and staining methods, Gram’s, Ziehl-Nielsen. Culture and antibiotic sensitivity testing of all samples- Urine, Sputum, Secretions, Pus
Body Fluids like CSF, Ascitic, Pleural, Synovial, etc.- Automated by VITEK system
Blood Culture – Automated by BACTEC system.

Mycology
Fungal staining and fungal culture for identification of fungal diseases. Stock cultures kept.
Virology
Diagnosis of viral diseases like Hepatitis A, B and C, HIV, Dengue by serological methods.
Serology
Widal, RPR, ASO – by Turbidometry, Scrub typhus and Leptospira (ICT)
Immunology
CRP by Turbidometry; RA by Latex agglutination
Parasitology
Stool Microscopic examination for parasitic ova, cyst and larva.
Equipment:
Service Laboratories include both conventional and Automated equipment (BACTEC, VITEK systems and CLIA for Blood borne viruses)
Molecular Laboratory: RT-PCR (Open and closed system)
Students’ practical laboratory includes over 140 binocular microscopes in a well-furnished and equipped hall with speaker system separate preparation areas.
The department Library is well furnished and air-conditioned with over 200 undergraduates medical, paramedical and post graduate reference books which includes the latest editions and volumes. The library is updated periodically with the newer books to cater to the needs of academics and research activities. The department museum is equipped with around 180 specimen and models.
Conventional diagnostic modalities have been incorporated along with state-of-the-art automated equipment’s with latest technologies into the laboratory services.
The Molecular Laboratory is accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) since 2020, in COVID-19 RT-PCR.
Around 30,000 samples in Bacteriology, Mycology and parasitology and 20,000 samples in Serology are reported annually.
Our round-the-clock Clinical Microbiology Laboratory functions every day of the year with no operational breaks, enabling timely and accurate reporting.
Supported by automated platforms, and stringent quality systems, the laboratory continuously strives towards delivering rapid, clinically relevant diagnostics that improve patient outcomes.
Infection Control Activities:
The Department also plays a major role in the infection control activities of the hospital that include the sterility check of blood bags, CSSD indicators, Water surveillance and Air surveillance of OT on a regular basis. The HICC medical officer from the department is involved in actively supervising the hospital infection control activities. Infection surveillance data is used to measure success of infection prevention, and control programs and to identify areas of improvement.
