SKILL LAB

The Skills Lab at Narayana Medical College, Nellore, is a dedicated facility designed to strengthen the clinical competence of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in accordance with the National Medical Commission (NMC) competency-based curriculum. The lab provides a structured and safe environment where students can observe, learn, and practice essential clinical skills before applying them in real patient care settings.

Modern medical education emphasizes competency, patient safety, and structured learning. The Skills Lab addresses these priorities by enabling students to practice clinical, procedural, and communication skills using manikins, models, trainers, and standardized patients. This approach allows learners to build confidence and achieve proficiency in a simulated setting before interacting with actual patients.

The facility fully meets the infrastructure requirements prescribed by the NMC undergraduate curriculum. It includes 25 dedicated patient examination rooms where individual students can examine standardized or simulated patients. These rooms are equipped with video recording facilities to support review and feedback. The lab also features demonstration rooms for small-group teaching, review and debriefing rooms for reflective learning, and cubicles for practicing skills individually or in groups. Adequate storage space is provided for manikins and equipment, along with a dedicated room for faculty and the lab coordinator.

Training in the Skills Lab follows a structured, stepwise approach. Students are taught in small groups under the guidance of trained facilitators. Sessions typically begin with demonstrations, followed by supervised practice and independent performance. This method ensures gradual skill acquisition and allows faculty to closely monitor progress. Small-group teaching enables objective assessment and personalized feedback, ensuring that students meet defined learning objectives.

The lab covers a wide range of skills, including clinical examination techniques, procedural skills such as suturing and catheterization, and essential communication skills. Equal emphasis is placed on teamwork, professionalism, and patient interaction. Through simulation exercises, students learn to respond to clinical problems, apply their knowledge effectively, and develop clinical reasoning abilities.

The Skills Lab serves both undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate programs. For undergraduates, the focus is on foundational clinical and procedural skills, with typically four students per working station to ensure adequate hands-on exposure. For postgraduate trainees, the lab provides advanced training in specialties such as General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Accident and Emergency. Postgraduate training includes higher-level procedures such as laparoscopic techniques, temporal bone procedures, and open reduction and internal fixation using appropriate trainers and models. Usually, no more than two postgraduate students are assigned per station to allow intensive practice.

The institution is currently advancing the facility by incorporating state-of-the-art high-fidelity simulators and expanding the use of standardized patients. These enhancements will enable realistic simulation of complex clinical scenarios and improve students’ history-taking and communication skills.

Overall, the Skills Lab at Narayana Medical College plays a vital role in competency-based medical education. By combining structured teaching, simulation, and objective assessment, it prepares students to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate healthcare.
