NARAYANA COMPREHENSIVE EPILEPSY PROGRAM

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Narayana Medical College & Hospital, Nellore, is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to the early diagnosis, comprehensive evaluation, medical management, and advanced treatment of patients with epilepsy. The program aims to provide patient-centred, evidence-based care through the integration of clinical neurology, neurophysiology, neuroimaging, neurosurgery, and rehabilitation services.

The program provides specialized evaluation of patients with new-onset seizures, drug-resistant epilepsy, difficult-to-control seizures, and complex epilepsy syndromes. Detailed clinical assessment, seizure classification, review of previous investigations and medications, and individualized treatment planning form the foundation of the program.

Advanced epilepsy monitoring and neurophysiological evaluation, including EEG and video-EEG monitoring, are utilized for accurate seizure characterization and localization of the epileptogenic zone. Appropriate neuroimaging and other investigations are incorporated into the presurgical evaluation of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.

A major component of the program is the comprehensive presurgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsy. Suitable patients undergo systematic multidisciplinary assessment to identify candidates for epilepsy surgery and other advanced therapeutic options. The program has also facilitated the introduction and development of advanced epilepsy surgical and neuromodulation services, including procedures such as stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), hemispherotomy, and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), wherever clinically indicated.

The multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to optimize treatment, improve seizure control, reduce medication-related morbidity, and enhance patients’ cognitive, psychological, functional, and social outcomes. The program also emphasizes counselling of patients and caregivers regarding medication adherence, seizure safety, lifestyle modification, first aid, and long-term follow-up.

In addition to clinical services, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program contributes to academic teaching, clinical training, research, case discussions, workshops, and continuing medical education for undergraduate, postgraduate, and specialty trainees. Awareness activities conducted as part of epilepsy-related observances further promote understanding of epilepsy and help reduce stigma associated with the disorder.

Overall, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Narayana Medical College & Hospital aims to provide an integrated, multidisciplinary and advanced-care pathway—from accurate diagnosis and optimized medical therapy to comprehensive presurgical evaluation, epilepsy surgery and neuromodulation—thereby improving seizure control and quality of life for patients with epilepsy.
