About the Department

The Department of Ophthalmology is a comprehensive eye care center dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the eyes and vision. From its humble beginnings, the department has grown into a well-established tertiary care specialty unit with advanced ophthalmic facilities and a strong postgraduate teaching program.

The department is supported by a committed academic team comprising 2 Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, and 3 Senior Residents, who actively contribute to patient care, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, surgical training, and research activities.

Equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic technology and modern surgical infrastructure, the department provides comprehensive and quality eye care across various ophthalmic subspecialties. Dedicated units in Cornea, Vitreoretinal Diseases, Glaucoma, Cataract and Lens, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Squint ensure specialized patient care while promoting focused academic training and hands-on clinical expertise for faculty members and postgraduate students.

Key Subspecialties

Cataract & IOL Services

Comprehensive management of cataracts including nuclear, cortical, posterior polar and posterior subcapsular cataracts using advanced microsurgical techniques such as phacoemulsification and Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The department also performs secondary IOL implantation procedures for aphakic patients and complex cataract cases requiring visual rehabilitation. Premium intraocular lenses including hydrophilic and hydrophobic foldable IOLs are available to provide optimal visual outcomes based on individual patient needs.

Cornea & External Eye Diseases

Diagnosis and management of corneal infections, corneal ulcers, dry eye disease, keratoconus, ocular surface disorders and corneal degenerations.

Glaucoma Services

Comprehensive glaucoma evaluation including intraocular pressure assessment, gonioscopy, visual field analysis, OCT-based optic nerve evaluation, medical management, laser procedures, and glaucoma surgeries.

Retina & Vitreous ServicesManagement of diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, retinal vascular disorders, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular diseases, retinal detachment, and vitreoretinal disorders with advanced diagnostic and surgical care.

Oculoplasty & Orbit Services

Management of eyelid disorders, ocular trauma and lacrimal surgeries including Dacryocystectomy (DCT)

About The HoD

Dr. V. Vijaya Lakshmi

Head of the Department of Ophthalmology

Prof. Dr. V. Vijaya Lakshmi is the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology. She is a highly experienced ophthalmologist, academician, and teacher with several years of dedicated service in medical education and patient care.

She completed her MBBS in 1987 from Sri Venkateswara Medical College, Tirupati. She later pursued her M.S. in Ophthalmology in 1993 from Kurnool Medical College under Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (Dr. NTRUHS). She underwent a Glaucoma Fellowship at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai (1993–1995) and also completed a Short-Term Medical Retina Fellowship at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, gaining advanced training in subspecialty ophthalmology.

Prof. Dr. V. Vijaya Lakshmi has served in various prestigious government medical institutions across Andhra Pradesh. She worked as an Assistant Professor at Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada. She further served as Associate Professor and subsequently as Professor of Ophthalmology at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Kadapa. She has also rendered her academic and clinical services at renowned institutions including Siddhartha Medical College and Guntur Medical College

Prof. Dr. V. Vijaya Lakshmi has received the Meritorious Award from the Krishna District Collector on two occasions in recognition of her dedicated medical and academic services. She was also nominated as a Member of the Board of Studies of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, reflecting her valuable contribution to medical education and curriculum development.

With extensive teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate ophthalmology training, she has guided numerous students and contributed significantly to academic development, clinical excellence, and research activities in the field of Ophthalmology.

Under her leadership, the department continues to provide quality eye care services, advanced clinical training, and academic excellence.

During the tenure of Prof. Dr. V. Vijaya Lakshmi as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology (14 May 2025 – 14 May 2026), the department demonstrated remarkable academic and research achievements through active participation in state and national conferences, postgraduate quizzes, paper presentations, and scientific competitions. The department secured several academic accolades. Multiple original research articles and case reports were published and presented on diverse ophthalmic topics including glaucoma, dry eye disease, ocular trauma, chalazion management, patient safety, and community ophthalmology. Several ongoing research projects and publications further reflect the department’s continued commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and evidence-based ophthalmic care under her guidance.

Postgraduate Teaching Programme

The Department of Ophthalmology offers a comprehensive and structured postgraduate training programme aimed at developing clinical excellence, surgical proficiency, and academic competence in ophthalmology. Postgraduate students undergo rotational postings in various subspecialty units including:

The Department of Ophthalmology is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training. The department provides comprehensive theoretical knowledge, clinical exposure, and surgical training to students and residents.

The department caters to an annual intake of 250 undergraduate  students for ophthalmology training and clinical teaching.

The department also offers postgraduate training in Ophthalmology with an annual intake of 6 postgraduate residents per year.

Undergraduate (UG) Teaching

The department conducts regular teaching programs for MBBS students, including:

Residents receive hands-on training under the supervision of experienced faculty members to develop clinical, surgical, and research skills.

  • 240 inpatient beds distributed across 8 units(split equally between male and female wings), reinforced by 24×7 emergency and critical care services,
  • ICU, HDU, and Step-down Care unit with advanced monitoring and life support systems
  • Fully equipped general wards with modern patient care amenities
  • Dedicated procedure rooms in wards and OPD
  • The institution houses advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services:

          –24×7 clinical lab support, radiological support with X ray, Ultrasound scan, CT, and MRI,ECG,

       –Echocardiography

       –dialysis facility

       –Digital access to investigations and patient records

  • Interventional Radiology services for advanced minimally invasive procedures
  • Endoscopy services with biopsy.

  • Integrated teaching galleries with audiovisual aids. All the lecture galleries are air-conditioned and have all the features of smart class room with over head LCD projector , sound systems etc
  • An AV-aid equipped seminar Room with a 70-seat capacity for daily postgraduate academics .

  • The department is supported by central diagnostic laboratories including biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, and radiology services round the clock
  • A dedicated Skill Enrichment Laboratory is available for training students in:

  • Basic and advanced life support (BLS/ACLS)
  • Procedural skills using mannequins and simulators.

This ensures competency-based skill acquisition before direct patient care exposure.

Thoracocentesis with pleural biopsy and plural fluid analysis

Lumbar Puncture and CSF Analysis

To support its tertiary care mandate,

the department is equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic tools including:

Multiparameter monitors, advanced ventilators, and defibrillators, infusion systems,

ABG analyzers and point-of-care testing devices

ECG, echocardiography, and bedside ultrasound support

Equipment for procedures such as central line insertion, lumbar puncture, pleural procedures etc,.

All equipment is maintained as per standard protocols to ensure patient safety , quality care and optimal outcomes.
