September 10th is celebrated worldwide as World Suicide prevention day. An initiative by World Health Organization, International Association for Suicide prevention. The triennial theme chosen for the years 2021-2023 is “Creating hope through action”. Every small action is a gesture to those with suicidal thoughts and can bring hope about a positive life. To commemorate this event, an awareness program was organized by Nellore psychiatric society, Department of Psychiatry of Narayana Medical College, NSS Units of Narayana Medical College, Narayana College of Nursing and Sri Narayana Nursing College, and Nellore Police Department. Following personals participated in the event Dr. Ramesh Balaji, President of Nellore Psychiatric Society, and the Superintendent of Police, Ch.Vijaya Rao, Additional SP Mrs. Himavathi (crime), Additional SP Mr. Abdul Shubhani (admin), Additional SP Mrs. Chowdeshwari, NSS program officers Dr M Prasad, Ms. Pallavi, Ms. Esther and Medical Students, Nursing Students and NSS volunteers. The program commenced with Welcome speech and messages by dignitaries followed by pledge administration by Dr. Gangadhar, later a Rally conducted from VRC to Mahatma Gandhi statue to create awareness about suicidal prevention. Lets hope for a Society where talking about suicide is normalised and people with such intentions are looked out for and given help at the right time.
