Department Overview

The Department of Neurology at Narayana Medical College & Hospital, Nellore, is one of the earliest super-specialty departments of the institution. Established in 2006, the department was founded with the objective of providing advanced clinical care, modern diagnostic services and comprehensive neurological treatment to the people of Nellore and neighbouring regions and states.

The department has developed into a comprehensive centre for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of neurological disorders, supported by an experienced and dedicated team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-rehabilitation professionals, neuro-nursing staff and allied healthcare personnel.

40-Bed Neurology Facility
From its initial stage with a small number of outpatient and inpatient services, the department has grown substantially and currently has a neurological inpatient capacity of 40 beds, supported by comprehensive clinical and diagnostic services.

Laboratories

1. Electrophysiology Laboratory

The Electrophysiology Laboratory is a major diagnostic and teaching facility of the Neurology Department. It is staffed by trained electrophysiology technicians and supports diagnosis and management of a wide range of neurological disorders.

Major investigations include:

  • Routine Digital EEG
  • Video EEG
  • Long-Term Monitoring (LTM) / prolonged Video EEG
  • EMG – Electromyography
  • NCS – Nerve Conduction Studies
  • EP – Evoked Potentials
  • VEP – Visual Evoked Potentials

2. Major Neurophysiology Equipment

The listed EMG/NCS system is Nicolet Synergy EDX V22, while the Video EEG/LTM systems include 32-channel and 64-channel configurations.

4. Neuroimaging Support

The Neurology Department is supported by advanced neuroimaging facilities, including 128-slice CT and 3-Tesla MRI. These facilities provide rapid imaging for neurological emergencies and help in assessment of stroke, epilepsy, structural brain lesions and other neurological disorders.

5. Central Clinical Laboratory Support

Neurology patients also have access to the institution's Central Clinical Laboratory, which provides 24/7 diagnostic services through its Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pathology divisions. The laboratory also provides research support to students and faculty.

6. Research Laboratory Support

For research activities, the college also has the Narayana Translation Research and Incubation Centre (NTRC), which provides advanced laboratory facilities including RT-PCR, flow cytometry, HPLC, fluorescence microscopy and other research equipment.
